Legends. Entertainers. Champions. All these have been present in the William P. Cole Memorial Field House. When Cole opened in 1955, no one could imagine the history that would be made therein. As the landmark sports arena on campus and in the state of Maryland, Cole Field House has hosted a multitude of historic sporting events; speakers of historical, political and cultural importance; and numerous legendary entertainers and musicians. For half a century, Cole was the centerpiece of an evolving university, and provided an ideal location for a diverse selection of events. When the University of Maryland sports teams moved to the newly built Comcast Center in 2002, Cole was renovated as office and classroom space. Cole Field House remains a major part of the University of Maryland campus because of its history and tradition.
